Event Review: Tokio Hotel – Feel It All Club Experience Part II – North American Tour

Words are not enough to explain the surreal feeling at the pit of my stomach on the afternoon of August 5th. The level of excitement combined with a shade of utter disbelief took me out of my own being and into another dimension. This is a band that has gotten me through so many bad experiences, break-ups, disappointments, and allowed me to wholeheartedly reinvent myself in high school. They were coming to my beloved city, Chicago, and performing at one of my dearest venues, The Chicago House of Blues.

After 2009’s Humanoid, the band had taken a five year hiatus and fans were dying to hear new music. We were teased with the world premier video of “Hurricanes and Suns,” a new song and bonus track from 2010’s Best of… album. Many of us freaked out thinking the band was going to break-up, little did we know that the quartet was actually going through a musical transition, in which they established full control over their newest full length release, Kings of Suburbia. Having full control over the production, lyrics and vision of the record became the concept behind the “Feel It All” experience.

At every show on tour, Bill Kaulitz (lead vocals) and Tom Kaulitz (guitar) like to pick a local artist to open up for them, which is an excellent way to give exposure to these hand picked bands. MXMS and the Victorian Halls opened at the Chicago’s House of Blues show and helped set up the mood for the Kings of Suburbia.

The concept of Tokio Hotel’s show was way different than anything we’ve ever seen before. The entirety of the tour is aimed at performing at smaller venues so that the audience can feel the quintessential intimacy and connection between themselves and the band. Having experienced the “Feel It All” performance on my own skin that fateful night, the guys have knocked it out of the park. They played all the songs off their new record, combining the new tracks with oldies, such as “Moonson,” “Screamin’,” “Noise,” “Automatic” “Darkside of the Sun” and “Rescue Me.” It was brilliant because it combined Scream, Humanoid and Kings of Suburbia in one concert. So for those who haven’t seen them live on tour, it served as the perfect scrapbook to all of their albums.

The craziest thing was the diversity of the audience – there were people there of all ages, and I don’t mean tweens and teens…try thirty some things and knowing all the lyrics to all the songs. Even though there were hundreds of people watching, you couldn’t help but feel that Bill was just singing and looking at you. The production of the show was exquisite. There was a multitude of costumes that Bill changed into. Between every three songs, he dressed in different outfits that complimented the theme of the song being played. The world slowed, time stopped, and everything else except the music became a faded blur. It’s safe to say I lost my voice for a day, but I have never felt so deeply connected with an artist than that night.

I was right to buy a tour shirt afterwards, because I have quite literally FELT IT ALL [that also happens to be the sign on my shirt].
