Tokio Hotel singer Bill laments lame love life

Bill Kaulitz, the lead singer of German pop band Tokio Hotel, told Berlin’s BZ tabloid on Monday that his love life was a major disappointment even though he was idolised by teen girls around the world.

If I look at the last five years, I didn’t have a chance to fall in love,” said Kaulitz, who admitted he last had a serious girlfriend when he was 15. “That’s really not enough for a 20-year-old.”

Kaulitz, known as much for his extravagant appearance as his music, said he doubted he’d truly fall in love any time soon.

It will probably never happen to me,” he told BZ. “I hope I’m wrong, but right now that’s a realistic assessment. There are no dates and there’s no chance to meet anyone normal.”

But he said speculation he was gay because of his penchant for makeup and big hair was “almost boring” and to be expected: “I think it’s completely okay for guys like me. Why shouldn’t it be?

The frontman for the former teenie rock band from Magdeburg also lamented how stardom had changed everyday aspects of his life.

I have people who take care of everything – which is pretty cool for the first two years,” Kaulitz said. “But nowadays I’d like to decide on my own how to fill my fridge.”

But only once did he dare indulge his shopping urge – at a supermarket in America at 3 am, when the store was completely empty. “That was the first time that I realised how much there is to buy,” he said.

Bill Kaulitz-Frontman from Mega-Band Tokio Hotel is always stuck by his extravagant styling. Recently, even more than usual ….

Dark eye make-up,perfect nail polished artificial nails. In interview with BILD.de he clears up things about his style, talks about his new film Arthur und die minimoys 2 and about his first kiss.

With its four-inch heels, he is almost two heads taller than the BILD.de editor. “I grew a bit, I’m 1.88 now,” says Bill by common photo,in the sitting position he prefers. “And for that I wear now heels!”

And not only that: the iroquis as hair, clothing by Christian Dior and Rick Owens (favorite designers of the Rockers, Madonna carries the mark of the American designer),lots of silver jewelry around her neck and leather gloves. Yound man can sure put himself in center of attention.

Bill? Do you find yourself in what you wear?

Bill: “yes, definitely. For me that was important from the beggining. To have that freedom,to wear what I want. The biggest piece of freedom is my own body.I want to decide how I want to look like.To have a stylist who decides everything for me would be my biggest nightmare. I could never do that. For me it’s important that I feel comfortable and am not bored.

Were you always so confident or you emancipated yourself over time?

Bill: “At the first meeting with our record company they wanted to give us stylists that should tell me how should I wear my hair. This was the first thing I deleted.I was 14 back then.In that area there were discussions from the beggining.”

Do you spent much money on clothes?

Bill: “It’s unimportant if my clothes are expensive or not. Before I didn’t have so much money so I did my own stuff,I sometimes do that today too.Or I draw something and than I make it. I have some jackets that cost $ 10. The main thing is it looks cool!

What other say about your style is unimportant to you?

Bill: “With Tokio Hotel, there were times when I could no longer hear the name. I could not see my own face, hair, everything.I could not take it amiss to others, if they felt like that.Than it came time for something else.Present myself differently.”

Do you find yourself beautiful?

Bill: “I am not the one that stays in front of mirror and says:Woah you are so hot. Also when lot of them think I do that, that I think like that about myself. When another people say that I look good,I am happy of course. You can see that.”

How much time do you need in mornings?

Bill: “With showering, dressing, make-up I need an hour until I am styled.Of course there are days when I do not style myself. To go with this hair (pointing to his Iroquois)to the airport, would be a little exhausting. Then I put on a cap and I have no make up.At home I get up and sit in the jogging suit unshaven front of the TV – like everyone else.”

In “Arthur and the minimoys 2″ you are speaking for the main character. He had his first kiss….

Bill: “Yes.To synchronize that in speech-cabin you have to kiss your own hand,so that can sound real. That is not nearly as romantic as comes across in the film.”

When did you have your first kiss?

Bill: “I was 9 or 10.Tom and I kissed the same girl.He kissed her one day before me.I was one day late.It was terrible.I think that first kiss was really not good.I thought it was terrible. The second was better.”

Do you want to take over the Hollywood next?

Bill: “Until now, there wasn’t proper role.I think it’s pretty hard to act.I have some experience in making music videos, but one whole film is a total different thing. When a right film comes than I could think of something.Films with vampires are my favourite. My dream as a child would be fulfilled if I had a chance to be in one.

Bill Kaulitz in next part of Twilight?  Teenie-star sure does have the right style to do that…

VJ Chino: Oh your video Automatic is currently at #3 here in MYX chart.. Any message
for your fans voting for your video?

Bill: That sounds really really great. so we wanna say “Thank You”. We’re
really excited about that and we have to see our fans very soon..

VJ Chino: Who came up with the concept of the video of automatic where you guys have like a big robot?

Bill: We shot the video in South Africa. We had the idea that we wanna have robots because we’re not really good actors.

VJ Chino: Alright. So let’s backtrack a bit. So, what was the story behind the name “Tokio Hotel”?

Bill: We travel the world and sleep in hotels. We play concerts everywhere so that’s
why we chose “Hotel”.

Tom: And “Tokio” just because of the town. We wanted a town that we don’t know.

VJ Chino: Did you guys expect to be this big internationally, not just in Germany?

Bill: we never expected that we’ll have the chance to get successful in Germany. And then we became successful in some other countries. It was really unexpected.

VJ Chino: Alright, so which bands or artist do you guys look up to? Like your favorite band?

Bill: I think there’s not one band because we are all really different when it comes to our music taste. My favorite bands at the moment are the Stereophonics and Kings of Leon.

VJ Chino: And for bill, how does it feel like a lot of people are copying your style?

Bill: It’s also kind of a compliment when other people try to copy your style. It has to be good so thank you for that.

VJ Chino: And lastly what’s your message for your Filipino fans especially the members of the Tokio Hotel Official Philippine Fan Club?

Bill: We wanna say “Thank You” for your support so far. It’s really unexpected that we have fans over there. It’s really cool to hear that and we’re so grateful. We wanna come out there definitely. Maybe in the beginning of the next year. We’ll come out there and have the chance to meet our fans.

Tokio Hotel: Human Connect to Human

Before I even locate the well-appointed midtown Manhattan hotel that Tokio Hotel is staying in, I hear the unmistakable sounds of giddy teenage girls. This is a common sight and sound wherever the handsome, young men of Tokio Hotel might be, anywhere around the globe. Yes, the multi-platinum, worldwide phenomenon Tokio Hotel is back with a seriously polished and seriously addictive new record in Humanoid. And the girls, well, the little girls understand. They rarely seem to talk of anything else as I spend 30 minutes in their orbit. Decked out in their finest Hot Topic or Torrid fashions, lacey black skirts, heavy makeup, t-shirts bearing the German band’s insignia, the girls excitedly talk to band personnel about which members of the band they have seen on the day. I hear directives and squeals mentioning “Bill, Oh my God!” and “Georg… sooooo cute!” They will be at Best Buy later for the guys’ appearance and signing, of course, and will continue to pine and yearn and make me jealous for the innocent, halcyon days of loving a band so much your heart might just burst. And after I spend 10 minutes with the guys in Tokio Hotel — brothers Bill and Tom Kaulitz, Gustav Schafer and Georg Listing — I can’t say I blame them.
Sitting across from Tokio Hotel in their hotel room, lead singer Bill is every bit the superhero he projects on stage, to a startling degree. Stunning, really, but then again, so is Georg. The sight of Bill in full rock star mode can’t be accurately summed up, but suffice it to say, the visual effect of his makeup, Mohawk and tight pants is incendiary and really quite genius. The boys are humble and gracious; and when I mention the girls on the sidewalk outside of their hotel, they all grin and inquire more about them. Their fans, you see, are priority numero uno for them, and I believe it. Tokio Hotel gives what they get; they connect.
You are so young to have produced a record of such confidence and maturity. How did the recording process go in comparison with Scream?
Bill: Tom and me, we co-produced this album, for the very first time, which was really, really cool. So, basically we produced it with our co-producers from the first record. We’re like one huge family in the studio. Everyone knows each other very well, so it’s really a family thing. We went into the studio for like, one year, and we tried so many different things, and this record is more electronic, so it’s a new sound.
Tom: Essentially, with the production, we wanted to create a new sound for us.
Bill: Yeah. It was really time for us to be creative and write new stuff, because we were on the road with the last record for such a long time. I think in December we played our last concert, with song that I had written when I was 13! So it was really time for new stuff.
Humanoid as a title is very evocative. What inspired it? Is this self-referential at all?
Bill: No. Humanoid was a feeling we had in our childhood, growing up in a small village. So we felt a bit humanoid. I think it was the way other people saw us.
As musicians, you felt…
Tom: As musicians, yes, and persons in general, I think.
Bill: Yeah, from the look and the whole thing. It also describes our life right now very well, because it’s not normal.
Tom: We went through all the songs, and we felt that the record should have the name Humanoid.
Lyrically, it feels like this is also an album about alienation from the world outside your walls, and from meaningful human relationships in modern day with the use of technology, and perhaps more universally, what it feels like to be a teenager. What are your thoughts on that?
Bill: Yes. I think we’re really old-fashioned with all of those things. We have no Twitter, and we’re not on the Internet so much. And I don’t use my phone! That’s what I recognized last week. I have two phones, but I don’t use them. They’re just in my room the whole day, and when I come in my room, I just take a look and I answer sometimes but sometimes not. I really like writing things down just with a pen and paper. It’s natural, which I really like. But I think the Internet stuff is really helpful, actually. For us as a band, it was kind of a really cool thing.
Tom: Yeah, we really use the Internet to stay in touch with the fans. To take them with us. We have TokioHotelTV, and everyone on the Internet can watch us the whole day, what we’re doing.
You really are very interactive. Even your fans that are outside on the street right now are very excited.
Bill: It’s hard sometimes when we can’t get to a certain country. We always wanted to take [them] with us, and we wanted to take them on the road so that they can see what we’re doing every day.
Why do you feel that “Automatic” is the best song to introduce this new sound and this record to the world and to your fans?
Bill: I think it has everything; it has great feeling and the right power. So, we wanted to have a really powerful song because the record is really powerful. ‘Automatic’ was one of the last songs we wrote, and so we felt so good with that song.
The video is crazy, kind of post-apocalyptic!
Bill: Yeah! The video is great. We shot it in South Africa for five days, a long shoot.
Tom: We had a safari hotel, and so it was fun. And different!
This record has such a huge, conquering sound. What do you want the world and your fans, and even America, to know about Tokio Hotel with this record?
Bill: We put everything in it. Some artists see it as a job; Tokio Hotel is our life. We started everything 10 years ago. We met each other in a natural way. Tokio Hotel is our baby, and we put everything and so much love into this record. That’s the most important thing – that the people know we are a naturally formed band.
Speaking of putting of yourselves into it, are the lyrics personal? Just looking at “Human Connect to Human” and “Pain of Love” or even “Zoom Into Me,” they feel personal.
Bill: Yeah, they are personal, but it’s not autobiographical all the time. But yes, there are personal things in every single song. You collect your ideas every day.
Tom: Yes. I think in every single song, you have your thoughts and your feelings. Everything!
Are you big people watchers?
Bill: Yes! I love to be in shopping malls sitting there drinking a coffee, watching people the whole day. It’s really funny.
When you think of America, what comes to mind?
Bill: It’s huge!
Tom: It’s the beginning for Tokio Hotel.
Bill: I think about the VMA’s!
What do you think it takes to break America?
Bill: Luck at first, and you need really good fans. Our fans are so cool and really supportive. It takes a lot of work, luck, and really good fans.
