re: Deutschland sucht den Superstar ~ Berlin, Germany

RTL Explosiv

They’ve been gone for two years. That’s a good 700 days. More than 17.000 hours. However, what does “gone“ actually mean? They took a run-up to gather speed for the jump onto the presumably biggest stage: DSDS. Tom and Bill Kaulitz: Back like a thunderbolt, in high spirits and with a new hairstyle.
Bill: We always said, like, if we were to be judges on a show then it would definitely have to be for the original, the classic show format. Erm, because we also believe in it the most and it’s good of course. “Deutschland sucht den Superstar is of course mainly a format that also offers the biggest platform to have commercial success afterwards and erm, all…
Tom: Well, definitely. After all it’s almost the only casting show where artists also really became successful afterwards, like, and erm, I think that was also important to us somehow. That, that… that above all it’s also a show where you can then have, like, a wicked outcome. And erm… hopefully we’ll find someone good there, right?
Bill: Yes.
Flown in from Los Angeles where it’s summer for 12 months, those two have come to record the judging panel casting for “Deutschland sucht den Superstar“ today. And after two years in warm America they’ve forgotten a few things about Germany, e.g. how cold it can be here.
Bill: We’re still a bit, erm…
Tom: Jet-lagged.
Bill: Yes, tired from the journey. We haven’t been here for quite a while and erm…
Tom: I would’ve liked to be here in summer to be honest. Well, I think it’s a bit… a bit nippy at the moment but apart from that…
Bill: Yeah, it’s obviously a bit of a cold shock and erm… However, we’re happy to be back in Germany again.
And back they are. With news that came as two real bombshells. One about Tom and one about Bill. It really did surprise many that they want to look for the new super star together with Dieter Bohlen now.
Bill: Actually we’ve been in the studio all this time, erm, day and night. Tom and I also got a studio in our home. We’ve got a home studio, erm, yes, we’re also producing an awful lot ourselves and are, like, writing. And that’s why all of this now is also occasionally just a good and very welcome change that we can just squeeze in. After all we can just continue working on the album, can go into the studio and erm, in between we can somehow look for new talents and get to listen to and watch other artists. And erm… Yes, that’s why it also made sense to us, right?
Tom: Yes.
The new “Deutschland sucht den Superstar“ season starts in January. It’s the tenth one. Today Bill and Tom are sitting in the judging panel. During the first season they were still sitting in front of the TV.
Bill: After all we also still hadn’t been standing on a stage professionally 10 years ago. Well, of course we had already been making music but we still weren’t… somehow still hadn’t had our breakthrough being a small band but had rather been around school band-wise. And that’s when one followed it. I think especially the first season was of course surrounding by a huge hype. I think there’s no-one who didn’t hear about it and also in the years that followed all the artists that had come from it were extremely successful.
Like those two: Sarah Engels and Pietro Lombardi. Second and first winner of the 2011 season. Today the two of them came by to take a closer look at the new judging panel.
Pietro: I can still remember when I was standing before the judging panel, it was just… I was so nervous. I had so much adrenalin in me and… Of course it’s the best feeling when you get three Yeses then.
One doesn’t know yet whether Pietro would manage the same again this year because Bill and Tom intend to set their own bars.
Tom: Well, at the end of the day we’re looking for everything that Bill hasn’t got. And what I have got.
Bill: Yes. Actually we know that it’ll also be fun.
Tom: I mainly hope that there’ll also be female talents for once because after all there is… First of all there just isn’t enough of… In general there are just too few female artists in Germany, I think. And furthermore, I think there has never really been, erm, a female winner, has there?
Twins: Once.
Tom: So…
Bill: Yes, well, I’d also be happy about female artists. Well, Tom and I, we’ll be mainly looking, erm… at…
Tom: … at the women.
Bill: … at the women, yes.
It’s the first DSDS judging panel that is all male but maybe there really will be a female winner once again next year if all of the guys take a little care of the girls.

RTL Exclusive

If this will go well? There are so many alpha animals in one place. The four gentlemen are meeting each other for the very first time today. It’s still totally uncertain whether the chemistry is right or not.
This is the smashing new DSDS judging panel: Dieter Bohlen, Tom and Bill Kaulitz from Tokio Hotel and Mateo, front man of the band Culcha Candela. It’s the first photo shoot together.

Bohlen sniffs at Bill.
Bohlen: What is that then? Smells good.
Tom: Then I’ve also got another one here.
Mateo: Yes, I’ve got a few.
And of course Dieter can’t refrain from making a comment about Bill’s rag.
Dieter: I’ve also got something like that at home. Well yeah, only difference is that it’s a carpet.
But apart from that I’ve got the same… well…
Tom: I’ve got something like that… I’ve got something like that down below. That’s what my down below looks like. Looks bigger
Diete: Iiiih. Yuck.
Bill: I thought I’d just turn up a little plainly dressed for the first day, right? I’ve left the crazy outfits in the wardrobe.
Tom: Nope, nope. It’s my time of birth. I’ve got 6.20am and he’s got 6.30am.
Dieter, what do you think about Bill and Tom’s outfit?
Dieter: It’s wicked of course. Well, there’s nothing I dislike more than boring people.
And Mr Kaulitz, what’s your first impression of the pop music titan?
Bill: Erm, we’re extremely happy. Well, like we’ve said before, we’ve never met before and erm, we’re of course happy. After all Dieter has already worked on all the previous seasons and erm, it’s obviously very good to have someone sitting next to you who has just been on so many seasons already, who knows the robes exactly and of course we’re happy to be a part of it.
For DSDS Bill and Tom are even halting their work on the new album with Tokio Hotel and are returning into the public eye and to Germany after almost two years of taking a break from the media. And they’re joining DSDS with quite a special wish.
Bill: Erm, secretly I’m hoping that there will be good women this year because so far too few women have won this after all. I’d think it’s great if there could be a female artist once again because there are too few good female artists in Germany, I think.
Dieter: This is also why there isn’t one on the judging panel.
Bill: Yeah, that’s why I’d be… We’d be really happy about it, I think.
Tom: We were looking for a female to join the judging panel but didn’t find one.
Mateo: Well, the thing about the Playboy for this year, right? I’d be willing to have a make-over if there’s a good offer.
Tom: I’d also do it.
Whether or not one of the guys really gets undressed for the Playboy? Whether or not Dieter ends up wearing Bill’s fluffy little jacket after all and whether or not everything here stays in harmony as much as it appeared to be today? We’ll only reveal that to you in January though. Unfortunately that’s how long we’ll have to wait for the new DSDS season.

Bill and Tom from Tokio Hotel have started their new job. Alongside Dieter Bohlen and Culcha Candela singer Itchy they’re judges for “Deutschland sucht den Superstar”. In addition, the twins are also working on a new record and once again they’ve got a new look since taking their creative break. More from Nadja D.

White hair, more tattoos and clearly more exercise, yet still unmistakably Tokio Hotel. For the first time Bill and Tom Kaulitz are in Germany again after having been in LA for two years and as newly-appointed casting judges they’re mainly looking for an authentic up-and-coming star here.

Tom: That a person walks in where you, like, say: ‘Awesome, somehow that’s already an artist!’ Meaning, it’s some kind of talent, it’s a person who just is the way they are and that’s good like that. And that you only have to polish them a bit so to speak.
Bill: Also recognition value. Well, that’s totally important to me.
Tom: At the end of the day we’re looking for everything that Bill hasn’t got. And what I have got.
Bill: Yes.
The 23-year old twins have got enough work experience. They’ve been standing on a stage professionally since 2005, and sold more than six million records. Work on album number four is in full swing by the way.

Bill: Actually we’ve been in the studio all this time, erm, day and night. Tom and I also got a studio in our home. We’ve got a home studio, erm, yes, we’re also producing an awful lot ourselves and are, like, writing. And that’s why all of this now is also just a good and very welcome change.
Maybe the alleged €500.000 pay also played a part in Bill and Tom joining the casting now and didn’t already do so for competitor ‘The Voice’ last year.

Tom: Bottom line is that for me the urge to also just nurture young people musically became so strong that I said I’d do it for free. Bill got sh!tloads of money and erm, that’s the truth.

Anyway, the two of them had to work today already. How strict Tokio Hotel’s judgements are will not be shown until next year though.

Lights on for the new DSDS judges: Tokio Hotel brothers Bill and Tom Kaulitz have returned to our screens and are back in Germany where they have to comment on something right away.
Tom: Well, I think it’s a bit… a bit nippy at the moment but apart from that…
Bill: Yeah, it’s obviously a bit of a cold shock and erm… However, we’re happy to be back in Germany again.
That’s because usually the twins are living in Los Angeles where they’re currently working on their forth studio album.
Bill: We’ve got a home studio, erm, yes, we’re also producing an awful lot ourselves and are, like, writing. And that’s why all of this now is also just a good and very welcome change.
What’s a change nowadays used to be an ongoing agenda for Bill and Tom seven years ago. They had their big breakthrough as Tokio Hotel with their first song “Durch den Monsun” in 2005.
Back then they were only just 16 years old. Their debut album “Schrei” sold 1.5 million copies. By the time they were 18 they were already millionaires and made fans’ hearts beat faster around the world. The guys polarise more than hardly any German band and not only because of their music but also with their performances and the ever-changing hairstyles and styles of singer Bill. And even today the 23-year old surprises with a new look for his head once again.
Bill: With me it always happens automatically and naturally. Yes, well… I was… I probably change more than other people but for me it just, like, comes with the territory.
However, for so much fashion-consciousness he also has to take a little joke from brother Tom every now and then.
Tom: *to interviewer* Maybe about my sunglasses because I especially stuck them here today. That was, like, my accessory for today and I actually thought it would also give me a new styling but…
In any case Tom keeps falling into joker mode time and again throughout our interview
Tom: Bottom line is that for me the urge to also just nurture young people musically became so strong that I said I’d do it for free. Bill got sh!tloads of money and erm, that’s the truth.
In return he also gets to sit next to the casting expert par excellence: Dieter Bohlen. He’s a DSDS judge for the 10th time. This time [he’s] part of an all male judging panel. However, there are not only three of them. There is another new judge at the desk. Culcha Candela singer Mateo. He formed the band Culcha Candela with two friends in 2001. In 2007 they released a truly catchy song with “Hamma!”
In the meantime Culcha Candela have released six albums and rocked over 900 concerts. Mateo says it fits the Bill for his job as a judge.
Mateo: I think I can sense it when people absolutely want it. This kind of absolute will to entertain and for entertainment because that’s where I come from. I’m not an exceptionally gifted rapper, singer or dancer but my strongest talent is just that I work hard to achieve things and to entertain.
Well, I’m honest. I’ve also got it tattooed here: “100% real”… It’s me with all my rough edges, and all my quirks. I’m just the way I am.
Voice-over: However, even for Mateo it’s a highlight that he’s sitting with Dieter Bohlen at the DSDS desk now.
Mateo: To be honest, I’ve got tons of respect for him as, erm… yes, as a producer and, like, a maker. Because after all you have to get this far first and then also stay there and I think it’s super. Meaning, something like this motivates me.
Voice-over: Anticipation for Bohlen and curiosity about Tokio Hotel.
Mateo: To be honest, well, I’m curios about what hairstyle Bill has got at the moment.
Voice-over: After all one still remembers him with black hair like this. Mateo can get his own idea of his fellow judges at their first meeting today. Visually all four next to each other already make for an exciting judges mix.Roberta Bieling (presenter): Well yes, we’ve said it before already: It’s the first work day for the new DSDS judging panel in Berlin today. Of course we’re there and now we go live to the boss himself, Dieter Bohlen.
Dieter, now there are four of you. What do you expect from this big judging panel?
Dieter Bohlen: Yes, I mean, I think with Tokio Hotel we also even have got some really big international stars with us for the first time. They, erm… Right now I can’t think of anyone else from Germany who also is just really successful internationally. Erm, then they’re also quite young, quite crazy, I think and in my eyes they’re also flamboyant, right? Well, based on that I’ll expect it to be very, very interesting for the audience and also with having Mateo from Culcha Candela. I think the combination is super good this time. We also don’t have a chick in our middle that only has to look good. Therefore, well, having four opinions, erm… certainly it’ll be working out well.
Roberta Bieling (presenter): In 10 years of DSDS, you’re the only one who has been a part of all previous seasons. So what’s the secret of its long-lasting success from your point of view?
Dieter: Oh well, I mean, we’re the only casting format that even generates Number Ones. Meaning, with all the other casting formats the candidates start driving taxi again after two weeks, right? To lead their existence. Erm, with us there’s 500.000 Thalers on the nail. Erm, I’d say those are all arguments speaking for DSDS. And, like mentioned before, there is this really immense success that the artists will have then. Though sometimes not for long but that’s not our fault. Erm, the artist has to be responsible for that themselves then, right? Well, every time I’m looking for something for the heart, for my eyes and something for the ears and every now and then I just get something for the rubbish bin. It can’t be helped, right?
Roberta Bieling (presenter): Hmhm, Dieter. Many thanks and have fun!

Punkt 9

1: …. thrilled with Bill and Tom. Tokio Hotel have started to work with their DSDS judging panel colleagues. So really, [there are] only men at the table.
2: Yes and [together] with Dieter Bohlen and Mateo from Culcha Candela all of them are also musicians through and through who are used to call the tune. Not only music-wise.
1: Oh yes. And right at the start there was already a bit of a first attempt to slag someone off. Christina G. and Roswitha M.-W. were there and also met some of the first casting candidates after their appearance before the judging panel.

The new all male circle at DSDS: lined up to tentatively get to know each other during their first joint photo appointment. Dieter Bohlen, the Tokio Hotel twins Tom and Bill Kaulitz and Mateo, front man of the band Culcha Candela.
Especially the twins were super well received by the first candidates.

Blond: I think it’s really good how they’ve turned out and also the way Bill changed. I really liked it styling-wise just now.
Boy: Actually they’ve made a positive impression on me now. Well, I… They also didn’t say anything bad about me or something like that.
Brunette: Really cool. Quite nice. Erm, I would’ve never guessed, really. So, wow… great. Really very likable people. Bloody cool and so on. Yes

There’s so much enthusiasm for the guys from Tokio Hotel. Whether the other two members of the judging panel can possibly live with that? And it’s without delay that main judge Dieter Bohlen can’t refrain from making a comment about Bill’s rag.

Dieter: I’ve also got something like that at home. Well yeah, only difference is that it’s a carpet.

Dieter:It’s wicked of course. Well, there’s nothing I dislike more than boring people.

Oh well, certainly this cooperation will be anything but boring. Everybody is curious about each other.

Bill: After all Dieter has already worked on all the previous seasons and erm, it’s obviously very good to have someone sitting next to you who has just been on so many seasons already, who knows the robes exactly and of course we’re happy to be a part of it.
Dieter: Back in the day when I was always the young guy in the studio that had the old producers sitting around in it, and I often used to think things like “Gosh, what is this bullsh!t they’re talking about?” and now I’m curious to find out what they are thinking, right?

It’ll also be exciting to find out what all four have got to say about the candidates and whether Dieter and Bill might end up seeing more eye to eye with regards to clothing matters after all.
That’ll probably be a bit difficult.

Punkt 12 -II

Roberta Bieling: We’re back again. Pop music titan meets teen idols. Will this go well? Many people asked themselves that question prior to the new DSDS judging panel’s first work day together yesterday. In fact Dieter Bohlen and the twins from Tokio Hotel really met for the first time at the judges’ desk. Why Dieter had to poke fun at his new colleagues straight away and what it is that Bill and Tom would really want to get out of their new job now. Simon E. and Christina G. have witnessed it all.

Arrival of DSDS’ new male quartet. It is their first work day, first encounter and sure thing, first of all top dog Dieter Bohlen has to sniff at newcomer Bill Kaulitz.
Bohlen: What is that then? Smeels good.
So they’re off to a good start. However, clearly the pop music titan and the band with the manga style are not on quite the same wavelength visually speaking.

Dieter: I’ve also got something like that at home. Well yeah, only difference is that it’s a carpet.
Bill: I thought I’d just turn up a little plainly dressed for the first day, right? I’ve left the crazy outfits in the wardrobe.

However, both of them brought along a clear notion of their job and also an idea of the potential new superstar.

Bill: Actually I’m assuming that we’ll immediately realise it when there are good candidates before us and when there is potential. Erm, secretly I’m hoping that there will be good women this year.

And the ladies should be in with rather good chances when facing the very first all male judging panel. That’s if, yes, if they’re not left without their voice due to all the nervousness.

Brunette: Really cool. Quite nice. Erm, I would’ve never guessed, really. So, wow… great. Really.
Blonde: In the past I actually used to be a Tokio Hotel fan and I haven’t… I haven’t heard anything about them in the media for a long time and now I’ve seen you… I’ve seen them on the DSDS screen just now.

And with all the shyness with strangers, even Dieter Bohlen says “Tokio Hotel: I would’ve also loved to have discovered them.”
Dieter: Those two… they wouldn’t have had to sing if they had come to DSDS back then. I would’ve put them through just like that and that’s also my opinion.

Even Culcha Candela front man Mateo, the forth one of the judges bunch, is quite fascinated by his new colleagues, Bill and Tom.

Mateo: I can’t get enough of looking at the guys. I’m finding it hard to stare into the camera. I’d actually rather, erm, exchange styling advice. Erm, or talk about tattoos, right?
Tom: Have you got some?
Mateo: For sure! Nah. You?

There’ll probably be more than enough opportunities to chat and maybe Dieter and Bill will even swap clothes some day. That’s to see in the tenth DSDS season. Though, unfortunately it only starts in January.
