AFTERBUZZ TV – AfterBuzz TV’s Spotlight On edition, is a long form interview series featuring Actors and TV personalities discussing their roles and shows as well as their thoughts, passions and journeys. In this episode host Jason Ikeler interviews Tokio Hotel.

Tokio Hotel’s Bio: Tokio Hotel is a German rock[4] band, founded in 2001 by singer Bill Kaulitz, guitarist Tom Kaulitz, drummer Gustav Schäfer, and bassist Georg Listing.[5] The quartet have scored four number one singles and have released three number one albums in their native country, selling nearly 5 million CDs and DVDs there.[6] After recording an unreleased demo-CD under the name “Devilish” and having their contract with Sony BMG Germany terminated, the band released their first German-language album, Schrei, as Tokio Hotel on Universal Music Germany in 2005. Schrei sold more than half a million copies worldwide[7] and spawned four top five singles in both Germany and Austria.

In 2007, the band released their second German album Zimmer 483 and their first English album Scream which have combined album sales of over one million copies worldwide and helped win the band their first MTV Europe Music Award for Best InterAct. The former, Zimmer 483, spawned three top five singles in Germany while the latter, Scream, spawned two singles that reached the top twenty in new territories such as France, Portugal, Spain and Italy. In September 2008, they won in the US their first MTV Video Music Award (VMA) for Best New Artist. In October 2008, they won four awards including Best International Artist and Song of the year at Los Premios MTV Latinoamérica (MTV Video Music Awards Latin America) held in Mexico. Tokio Hotel became the first German band ever to win an award at the MTV VMAs and also at the MTV Latin America Awards. They also picked up the Headliner award at the MTV Europe Music Awards 2008 held in Liverpool on November 6, 2008 and the Award for Best Group on November 5, 2009 at the MTV Europe Music Award (EMA) held in Berlin. They won an Award for Best World Stage Performance on November 7, 2010 at the MTV Europe Music Awards in Madrid. In July 2011, they became the first German band to win an MTV Video Music Awards Japan (VMAJ). They also won MTV’s 2012 Musical March Madness and in 2013, they won the MTV O Music Awards four times in a row for “Fan Army FTW” and the MTV Europe Music Awards for “Biggest Fans”. Their fifth studio album titled Kings of Suburbia was released in Germany on October 3, 2014 and worldwide on October 6.

Punkt 6

They’re no longer boys, but men. Tom and Bill Kaulitz are back in their home country. Thanks to DSDS.

Tom: Sometime it’s actually also super to come to Germany again and to be doing something here. Erm, and… erm… Well yes, therefore…
Bill: And above all we’ve also always wanted to, well, look at young talents and watch new artists and so on. Actually we have always fancied doing this.

After all, it’s about time that the two of them show their faces again because things have been rather quiet around the Tokio Hotel brothers for the past two years. The band suddenly withdrew at the peak of their success in 2010. No more music, no more interviews. The four guys from Magdeburg have had enough.

Tom: After all, we somehow were on tour and on the road non-stop for five years and erm… Some day we reached the point when we said ‘Right, now we just have to have a break, and do something different.’ And above all to have some kind of an at-home feeling for once. To have a house where you get home to and say ‘Here is where we’re living now.’

Here“, to the identical twins Bill and Tom that was and is the US metropolis Los Angeles. For a good reason.

Tom: Mainly LA because we, erm, just wanted to produce and because I think, we were most likely to find some peace quicker there. Meaning, that was a bit difficult in Europe.
Bill: Yes. Many people are always like this and then think “Ah, they’re only 23. How can they somehow, erm, withdraw themselves for two years?” Erm…
Tom: However, we’ve started out aged 15 after all.
Bill: However, we’ve started out aged 15 after all.

However, the break came at a cost. Time and again it’s reported that Tokio Hotel  broke up a long time ago. Even now the rumours don’t want to die down but “All of that is rubbish.” the brothers say.

Tom: Nope, nope, it’s only the two of us on the judging panel but we’ve got… Nope, nope, Georg and Gustav are also around. They, they continued living in Germany but they’re around again. They come over to LA, and we’re in Germany from time to time.

So, creative break. As if. Work on the next Tokio Hotel album has already started.

Bill: Lately we’ve also just spent loads of time in the studio and have also been working. It’s not as if we’d only been relaxing all day long somehow but of course we’ve also done that. Meaning, we’ve also deliberately been taking a bit of a break and relaxed.

However, the relaxation time is over now. Tom and Bill really want being members of the DSDS judging panel give it their all. Currently the castings are happening. A real challenge for the twins.

Bill: It‘s definitely rather exhausting. Meaning, we really also see loads of people. However, of course it’s also totally fun.

By the way, the two of them also have fun with the rest of the judging panel. So it really looks like Bill and Tom will actually be staying at home in Germany for now.

Punkt 12

They’ve been gone for two years. They virtually vanished into thin air. Only little was heard about Bill and Tom from their voluntary exile in LA.

Bill: For the past two years we‘ve actually withdrawn ourselves for a bit. Deliberately. After all we consistently didn’t give any interviews and no, erm… didn’t do anything. We somehow retreated privately but also musically to do new stuff.

Bill and Tom changed quite a bit. After all they used to look like this. The teens became young men. Today Bill wears his hair styled up, and for the next interview he wears big glasses and a cap.

Bill: I just never wear, like, a certain styling and I also don’t create it. Meaning, it actually happens entirely automatically and naturally with me.

For a long time one wondered “What became of the brothers?” The band suddenly withdrew at the peak of their success in 2010. The four guys from Magdeburg had enough of the celebrity hype.

Bill: Many people are always like this and then think “Ah, they’re only 23. How can they somehow, erm, withdraw themselves for two years?” Erm…
Tom: However, after all we’ve started out aged 15.
Bill: However, after all we’ve started out aged 15 and two years are actually… That just goes by so quickly.

During their break rumours about anorexia in Bill kept appearing. Even accusations of drugs and alcohol use. Time and again it’s reported that Tokio Hotel broke up a long time ago but “All of that is rubbish.” the brothers say.

Tom: Nope, there’s not just only the two of us left! Nope, Nope. No. Nope, nope, nope, nope. Nope, nope, it’s only the two of us on the judging panel but we’ve got… Nope, nope, Georg and Gustav are also around. They, they continued living in Germany but they’re around again. They come over to LA, and we’re in Germany from time to time. Yes, and we’re working on producing the next record.

Allegedly the twins retreated to this villa in LA. Rather posh but not what it’s about first and foremost.

Tom: We just wanted to have a break, and do something different. And above all to have some kind of an at-home feeling for once. To have a house where you get home to and say “Here is where we’re living now.” because one just never had that before. We’ve always been on the road.

They came back to their home country for DSDS. It’s a fresh start of sorts for Bill and Tom.

Tom: Bottom line is that for me the urge to also just nurture young people musically became so strong that I said I’d do it for free. Bill got $#!tloads of money and erm, that’s the truth.

He wasn’t all that serious but they’re happy now to be a part of the DSDS family. They gladly ended their hiatus for that.
