Tokio Hotel are taking world by storm

Originally hailing from Germany and now finding solace in Los Angeles, the young rockers are celebrating the release of their fifth studio album, Kings of Suburbia. Peaking at No. 1 in 30 countries on iTunes, the disc is one of several examples of Tokio Hotel’s impact on the world of alternative rock.

Today (Feb. 20), Diffuser is beyond ecstatic to give fans a different taste of Tokio Hotel with a stripped down rendition of their insanely catchy track, “Girl Got a Gun.” Check it out in the video above.

Performing for the web series At: Guitar Center With Nic Harcourt, the guys in the band take a couple of minutes ahead of the gig to explain the background of the song, saying they wrote it and put it together rather quickly.

We were trying to find a good verse for some other song that didn’t even end up on Kings of Suburbia … and we came up with that hook … it just stuck in our head the whole day,” frontman Bill Kaulitz says.

As for the meaning behind the tune, he thinks it’s relatable for most people who hear it: “I was with a person that I shouldn’t have been with at the time … that’s what the song is about, a girl that has a gun, a person that’s dangerous for you.”

In our recent exclusive chat with Tokio Hotel, Bill’s brother, multi-instrumentalist Tom, told us that “Girl Got a Gun” was one of the hardest songs for him to finish, but also one of his favorites: “I’m so proud of this song because there are so many details that went into it.”

Los Angeles, CA

Way back in 2011 we got an offer from the radio station 98.7 to pull into the alley behind The Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles and film the band Switchfoot. We thought we’d made it….

Since then we’ve obviously gone on to film plenty of big named musicians, and our social media following has grown along with us. Yet the day we taped Tokio Hotel still managed to blow my mind. I don’t even think the band retweeted our tweet about us filming them. Some fan just saw it, retweeted it and then it was in the hands of their millions of minions and fan sites galore. They have an army of devoted girls and boys chomping at the bit to watch them do anything, like literally anything. They got stoked at pictures of the band standing in an alley using their cell phones. So heaven help the internet when we drop these videos. Let the Tokio Hotelaholics loose. It’s time to break the web…

Exclusive: Tokio Hotel Plays 2 Songs at Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate on New Year’s Eve

Fresh off the release of their fifth full-length Kings of Suburbia, German band Tokio Hotel performed two songs from the album in front of a massive crowd at Berlin’s famous Brandenburg Gate on New Year’s Eve. Today Billboard is exclusively premiering footage from the show, which includes the band playing their latest single, “Love Who Loves You Back,” and their first live performance of “Feel It All.”

The twin brothers in Tokio HotelBill and Tom Kaulitz — moved from Germany to Los Angeles before making Kings of Suburbia. Bill calls this period “the first real life we’ve ever had. We had come out of school at 15, started the band, and from that moment on, there was no private life, only Tokio Hotel.” In L.A., the German superstars were relatively unknown. Tom says, “We wanted to do regular stuff, things we couldn’t do before. I was riding my bike, bought groceries, and went to the DMV. It was great.”

The band wasn’t necessarily looking to play a show in Berlin on New Year’s Eve. “Usually we reserve that night to party,” Bill jokes, “But it was hard to say no when you get to perform in front of more than half a million people!

We had a blast,” he continues. “All of our friends and family were there. We got super drunk after the performance and went out all night. We left the last club at 6:30 in the morning. It was definitely a night to remember!
