Bill Kaulitz in the interview:
It is my absolute dream album

In two weeks the new album of Tokio Hotel will be released. “Dream Machine” is the new work and for Bill Kaulitz (27), it is his dream album. The boys are currently in Berlin and rehearse for their tour. Laura from klatsch-tratsch.de met the gentlemen at the “Iconist” award in Kreuzberg and talked to Bill about the new album, fashion and inspiration.

You recorded an LP all by yourself for the first time. How was that?
We started making the album at the Red Bull Studio in Berlin and put the foundation here. Tom and I have a studio in Los Angeles and had written all by ourselves. Without any stress. Our label has given us the complete freedom to do everything. They did not hear anything until the end. About ten days ago we showed you the finished record.

Were you afraid they might not like it?

No not so. We feel mega well. For me it is so my absolute dream album. We were relatively sure that everyone will like it. And we ourselves feel comfortable with it. That’s the most important.

Who inspired you with this album musically?
We do not actually hear any music when we are composing. We were in our own bubble. We have written a lot. It was very nostalgic. This is also the feeling that comes across the album. And we have quite a little bit of the outside from us. There were just four of us in the Pro space. But I am generally more and more inspired by films and less by other music.

What films would that be?
My absolute favorite movie is “The Journey into the Labyrinth” by David Bowie. But “Baseketball Dairies” (“Jim Carroll”) and “Kids” are the films that have influenced me in terms of fashion, aesthetics and style.

Speaking of style. You were the last years in Los Angeles. What did you learn about fashion in the metropolis?
I find L.A is not a fashion town. They are often a bit prollig. I feel more European. I also always feel I get out of there. L.A inspired me in fashion not at all, because they are more swimwear and flip flops.

And how long have you been in Germany?
Only briefly. We are here until May. We are just rehearsing here in Berlin and in March our tour starts in London. This will always be a show with us. We always have costumes and a real show. We are planning and making the lighting design. We have been sitting there for months now.
