Tokio Hotel: “it was time to return to the Peru

We talked with Bill Kaulitz,
lead singer of the German band who returns to Lima in August with their new album

Five years have passed since the first concert of Tokio Hotel in Lima and many things have changed for the band since that occasion. To begin with, its members are no longer the kids that are fired from adolescence in those years. Their looks have also varied much, but, above all, their musical proposal. After a break of a year, the grouping returned to the recording studio to work on an album with a more personal touch. Tired of the pressures of the record label, they decided to produce the album on their own and, thus, get the sincere work of his career. Bill Kaulitz, vocalist of the band, tells us more on the subject in this telephone conversation:

The day that officialised your show in Lima, their fans turned them into one of the most discussed topics on Twitter.

That could be great!

They are really excited about his return.

Well, it’s always nice to see when people are delivered completely in our shows and South America tends to be so. It’s great to come back, because we always have great shows there, so we were very eager to take this tour and finally announce it is great. Hear this sort of thing really makes us happy and we appreciate it very much makes us have more desire to go. I know that it will be a great concert. Much time has passed and it was time again. We are very excited.”

His first concert in Lima was five years ago. I remember the hysteria generated this time, but do you have memories?

I always knew that the Peruvian public was a very intense, very high energy audience as you say. And you can feel it this time on stage. But, you know, it is always I feel that time passes quickly when you’re up there. It is as if you go up to the stage and me down in seconds, so I can’t wait to feel that energy again.”

Return to Lima with a new album, an album that it’s predecessor comes nearly six years after “Humanoid”,.

Yes, we decided to take a creative break to study then again knowing what he wanted. We had been on tour for a long time and we needed to take some time. Separate us, go each one by his side. The tours, concerts… needed to leave that for a while to make a very good album. So we disappeared for a time, walked through there and returned to the Studio to write. This time had the opportunity to write, produce… to do everything on our own, what was new for us, but we wanted that to be our next step. It took us more time than we think (work on this new album). We do not think that it would be five years, but at least the album is good” (laughs).

Do you think that a risky decision was having taken that break? I.e., you decide to leave everything for a time when his career was at its best.

It is that even if your career is going very well, you always have to take some time to make a record. We have never been groups throwing discs each year because they have to do it. We have always wanted to make large disks, it is something that we personally love. Growing and making you more you music also changes, so we needed to also stop and evaluate what kind of music we wanted to make, how it should sound new songs – we needed that time and then back.”

During that break, your brother and you moved to Los Angeles.

Yes, we still live in Los Angeles. It is that it was impossible for us to have a private life in Europe. Things had gotten out of control, so we needed a place where we could have privacy. Los Angeles was the perfect city for that. We had known: producers and friends living here, so it was the perfect combination. And here we are.”

I like the name of this new album, “Kings of Suburbia” (“the Kings of the suburbs). For what that title?, have you ever felt so?

We chose the name in the process, when we recorded the album. We chose it because we had this memory of when we were super young and lived in Germany and we filled of such enthusiasm with a project or when we did a good song that we were the Kings of our own world. We are now experiencing what we dreamed and remember that feeling and how we feel with the same energy in the studio.

Are you composing more English now? All the songs on this new album are in that language.

When music is not like the translations. Did for the previous record: translate the songs in German to English and took so long… It was also as forced. We didn’t want to force anything on this drive and we decided that if we recorded a song in English, it would be in English and, if it was written in German, as would be in German. We didn’t want more such translations. We are very happy with that. Of course, that doesn’t mean that we won’t have any more songs in German, but for now we are Yes much writing in English.”

Tell me a little bit of the show brought to Lima, what can fans expect?

We bring all the songs from the new album, so there will be much of “Kings of Suburbia”, but we save our Classics (laughs). In general, it is a very energetic show. The idea, because the disc is very electronic, is to move people to a night club. We want to have a giant party. That is the plan because the disc is very inspired by the nightlife. We want to bring that to the stage. There are a mind-boggling work lights, the show is very electronic, incredible costumes. It will be a great party!
